The Desert it Opposes is a training that employs silence as a transformative tool to excercise mutual listening. Its intention is to shape non-hierarchical forms of discussion as a first step to create inclusive spaces withinin educational and business structures. Through a set of protocols, the project investigates how changing the rules of conversation can shift behaviors: it is not a technique to end disagreement but a way to encourage openness to different perspectives.

As Calvino wrote that “each city receives its form from the desert it opposes,” so is every dialogue woven by the silences it contrasts, the latter being a necessary vessel that allows to receive what’s being heard and to slow down the rhytm of interaction.

The training is facilitated by the moderator through the use of a collection of tools that create the setting for the training to happen and support the practice.
The soft clock—a visual metronome ringing at fast, medium, long or extended intervals—sets the duration of the exercises. The talking stick—a quiet remembrance of a microphone—creates the opportunity for all to be listened to. It signals who is to listen in a specific moment and can be used to establish the order of interaction.
The mats—that allow for different body positions—set the stage and can be split in different configuartion to allow specific roles to the participants.

Adopting the role of the moderator, the designer constructs the flow of interaction and distributes silence and speech, using rules as generators of new collaborative approaches.

This research has been part of the 2021 MAPPs of the School of Commons, a community-based initiative dedicated to the study and development of self-organized knowledge, located at the Zurich University of the Arts.

↳ the project is currently exhibited as part of ITALY: A New Collective Landscape at the Hong Kong Design Institute, until May 19th 2024

The website acts as an archive of the practical research as a way to make the exercises accessible. In addition, the soft clock, a randomized visual timer, is available for use.

In 2022 I was approached by Gabriel Hensche and Engy Mohsen to add a game to their series How To Love Many In Many Ways, an open-edition collection of games, exercises, and playful texts that depart from expanded notions of “love.”Elaborating on listening as on possible expression of love, I developed a card game inspired by the UNO game but centered around conversation and mutual listening.

All games are thought ot be shared andare easy to print on A4 paper. They are published online under the Creative Commons license. This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon the work non-commercially, as long as they credit the artist and license their new creations under the identical terms.

In 2023, Gabriel Hensche and I were invited to organize games in the context of Commopoly, a participatory art project by Curatorial Collective for Public Art and Parzelle X. For these events, we planned a system of five “levels” : in the first 3 rounds the conversation topics would become increasingly difficult, while in the last 2 rounds players would have to relate to each other with bodily exercises taken form the How To Love Many In Many Ways.
The intention was to engage locals around topics such as neighborly relationships and the commons. At each level they would win points, in the form of plant seeds, that they then planted on the field and will be harvested at the closing event in September.

Ciona are doing well is a design research project made in collaboration with Benedetta Pompili. The book focuses on Ciona intestinalis, a little-known organism, unconsidered and unrepresented in culture. It tells the life of Ciona while showing the resilient features that makes them such a special animal.Through a down to earth and playful tone, it familiarizes the readers with this alien-looking being, that is genetically closer to humans than expected.

The project is part of the Pedagogies of the Sea course at the MA Social Design at Design Academy Eindhoven held by Angela Rui and Anastasia Kubrak. The class approaches the ocean from an ontological perspective, and explores how thinking with the ocean as a theoretical and research tool can foster the ability of designers to generate awareness and social change.

Developed with Francesca Tambussi and Elias Rhouzlane.
Care Fiction is a project developed during Stigmergy, the 2020 research seminar led by Martina Muzi at Design Academy Eindhoven.
Invited to think at the intersection of the broad phenomena of self-organized systems and the notion of care, we, a group of three master students with a shared interest in the digital and urban Commons, built a thinking toy for commoning co-fabulation. It is a decentralized peer-to-peer website where anonimous visitors are invited to co-write and sketch a commoning story around an abandoned building in Eindhoven.

Through playful exercise and experimentation, it aims at laying the imaginative foundation for future Commons. By bringing to the foreground the phase 0 of every collective enterprise—the dreaming stage—it provides a space for rehearsal of commoning, envisioning and projecting. It aims at raising questions regarding the care of public and not-so-public spaces and resources in the city.

Lahar is a pocket-sized zine that opens up into a poster. With a different theme giving shape to each issue, it aims to explore different facets of common concepts that are present in our daily lives and that sometimes go unnoticed.

Founded in 2016 and active until the end of 2019, Lahar Berlin was the daughter-project of an Italian publication and partly supported by it, yet independent in its organisation and content choices.
It is submission-based and it collects contributions from all over the world. It comprises short fiction, photography and illustrations, including work by non-professional artists. All team members are volunteering and driven by a desire to provide a platform to show creative work; it is a pretext to establish conversations and connections. We aim to reach a broader audience by presenting Lahar with launch events and by participating to independent zine festivals.

Members of the team, at different times, have been: Celeste Moura, Linda Rossi, Rosita Uricchio, Ludovica Francesca Lombardi, Charles Chan-Wai Wong, Eleni Gkelameri, Jasmina Janoschka, Giulia Lago, Tamara Fantinato.

This is a project from 2013, a very old one, but I still appreciate the amusing character of it. Iole is a light and easy transportable anchor for air matresses.

When thinking of a possible idea for my bachelor’s graduation project, I reflected upon one of the role of the “problem solvers” that designers takes on. I considered that I could problably solve best the problems I had most experience with. I knew wasn’t facing any particular challenge, so I concluded I could solve a very trivial problem.
Sleeping on a floating mattress is great, but you can’t relax if you’re afraid of being pushed around by the waves.

The body is designed to be made in a single material (high density PE) and contains a deflated air matress and a rope. Once these are pulled out, it must be filled with sand or pebbles to reach the required mass to sink and grasp the sea bottom. This would allow the user to take a nap on a floating mattress, without worrying about drifting away.
I considered the context and conditions of use and tried to make use of what was already there. I decided to reduce the number of materials to minimum, in order to eventually make disassembly and recyclyng easier.

In June 2016 Iole won the ADI Targa Giovani, an award for young designers issued by the Italian Design Association.

The anchor’s body is composed of three pieces to enhance its strength.
